Today, I cleaned out my work inbox and many of my stored folders on the work email server in order to brace for the onslaught of email I won’t read while I’m not working for the next two weeks. I even completed most of the things I set out to do this week. All except one item, but it got too hot up in my office today. Mid 70s (F) outside, about 90 (F, about 30 Celsius) in my office due to the fact I’m up in the roof of the house and that part of the house gets all the hot, afternoon sun.
One thing I did do, even though my wife wasn’t real keen on the idea of me buying more electronic goodies, was get a Linksys/Crisco WRT54G wireless access point. It does 802.11b (11Mbs) and 802.11g (54Mbs) in the 2.4 Ghz range. My Nokia Access Point was getting a bit long in the tooth and had so many issues, I didn’t even know where to begin. This Linksys things worked right out the box, has a bit stronger signal, and is definately more up-to-date. Heck, it runs Linux and lots of people have figured out how to hack and/or replace the firmware. Sounds like something I’ll have to play with.
I am discovering that I like having Wireless LAN access in general, even with CAT5E everywhere. And I think I have much better coverage with this Linksys access point too. The main reason I started bothering with the Wireless LAN idea gain is that I’m testing some equipment that makes use of a Wireless LAN. While I’m not sure I’m at liberty to discuss what it is at this point, I can say that an article for it will be on Voxilla at a future time.
