Dual-mode handsets that have UMA technology built into the phone actually conserve power when on Wi-Fi by putting the cellular radio in a sleep mode. It's said that UMA-enabled phones can allow up to 12 hours of talk time and 250 hours on standby.

As I currently am using a Nokia N95 and an iPhone (both WiFi-enabled), I don't think I can ever go back. I'd say I have WiFi access more than 75% of the time in my usual day and even when on the road can find WiFi at least 50% of the time. It's so much better than the 2-2.5G the carriers offer.

I loved EVDO on the Verizon Treo 700p I used to carry but no WiFi and a year+ wait for a firmware update soured me on that platform (this is the first time in about 20 years that I'm Palm-less).
