You don’t need a data only plan since Ringfree barely uses data. It’s a callthrough over thee cell phone network to Ringfree’s call-in number. There a server converts it into VoIP. More comparable to Jajah Direct.

@dziny A SIP client for the iPhone would certainly be more flexible–for people who know what they’re doing. Based on my years of mucking about with Linksys devices, that crowd is few and far between. RingFree solves the problem for everyone else.

A ‘DATA-ONLY’ unlimited plan is not necessary. RingFree is a callthrough application which needs only a small amount of data over the EDGE network to signalize the call. The rest is a local phone call to the RingFree call in number. There a server takes over and sends the call over the internet. RingFree doesn’t use VoIP on the mobile leg of the call. That’s what makes it so smart.

There were few rumours of SIP client for iPhone, but we still need to see one. I think people would appreciate it more than the service RingFree is going to provide. Although, let’s see how it goes…. Also this article explains what happened to voxilla, it was very grand for few months after the page redesign and then all stopped around October.

Perhaps this will become more enticing if AT&T ever offers the rumored unlimited ‘DATA-ONLY’ plan to iPhone users (since RingFree is a web-based app, as stated above)
