While Nokia’s been “experimenting” with Windows Phone, they’ve been working on their Asha line of phones that is geared towards developing nations with much more restricted mobile networks. Personally, I find these more intriguing. And I wonder, like Mister Mobility does, is Asha OS the first world smartphone for a third world mobile network?

As The Verge points out, Google has not yet combined all of their various communication services into the new Hangouts app for iOS and Android. We’re still missing large chunks of Google Voice.

19 May 2013, Michael writes: It's beginning to look like GV will be ended like Google Reader and so many other services. The biggest difference between Google/Hangouts, Apple/iMessage, Facebook/Messanger, BlackBerry/BBM, Microsoft/Skype, etc. is that they each use their own identity system. A Skype user cannot FaceTime me, nor can they use Hangouts to connect to me. I have many, many emails but only one telephone number (2 including my GV number). Eliminate the GV phone number and you've eliminated GV. Sad situation where communications is becoming more and more fragmented, as we integrate more and more into our mobile devices.

At Google I/O, they announced that the Samsung Galaxy S4 would be getting the Nexus treatment, i.e. stock Android. It would be a special version they sell on the Google Play store for $649 starting June 28th.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 144: T-Mobile USA’s $30 Plan

T-Mobile has a number pf prepaid plans, but by far the best one is their $30 unlimited data (5GB at 4G speed) unlimited text and 100 voice minutes. Not sure why T-Mobile makes this plan so hard to get, but it’s, quite possibly the best wireless plan in the US for people who have smartphones and don’t talk much.

What truly frustrates me about T-Mobile is the limited hardware support for HDVoice. They don't support the flagship Android phone or anything BYOD.

10 May 2013, tom writes: yes this is a pretty nice plan, but i wish it were possible to switch between pay as you go and this plan or better yet i wish t-mobile would sell data buckets that could be added to a pay as you go plan and than used as needed. i also have a couple extra phones around that i mostly just play around with on wifi. i would like to have a couple extra SIM cards that i just pay for the data i use as needed but mostly sit in drawer. if i could buy say 10GB of data with a one year expiration date it would be absolutely perfect. at least a few carrier in Europe offer similar options i wish it were available in USA. one thing i have noticed about t-mobile lately is that in order to activate a phone they ask for the IMEI number. i can still swap the SIM after activating but the very act of asking for the IMEI seems to go against the spirit of keeping the SIM/plan as something separate from the hardware device. just out of principle i should be able to buy service without revealing what phone/device the servie will be used on. tom
10 May 2013, Dameon Welch-Abernathy writes: Data-only SIMs that I could load/use on demand would be awesome. We're a ways from that, I'm afraid. I'm not a fan of asking for the IMEI during activation either but let's face it: they're going to know what IMEI you're using anyway. I believe they will lock the SIM to an IMEI in some specific cases--presumably when you buy certain prepaid phones and/or you're a new customer.

App Dot Net Launches Passport for iOS

App.Net, the social network that I describe as a platform that enables many different experiences, has launched their Passport app for iOS (download link)!

For those of you curious about app.net, this is a great way to, first, get a free-tier App.net account (normally you’d have to get an invite from someone), see the different iOS apps that utilize the app.net APIs, find people to follow, and manage your App.Net profile. It purposefully does not perform any messaging functions as you are encouraged to use third party apps to interact with App.Net (unlike Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc).

It’s also supports the ability to pass your App.Net credentials to other App.Net applications, making it easy to try new apps without entering your App.Net credentials in again. Apps have to add support for this feature, which is relatively straightforward from what I can tell.

I really enjoy being on App.Net and hope you’ll take advantage of the Passport you’ve been given to try it out. If you want an invite and not using an iOS, leave a comment with your email address and I’ll send one.
