PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 810: Important But Not Urgent

While listening to a piece on Last Week Tonight about the sorry state of our infrastructure in the United States, I realized why were in this mess: people often skip important but not urgent tasks. Maintenance of all sorts usually falls into this category.

I've seen people want to avoid Google, Apple, or Microsoft for various reasons. But avoiding all three? Very tough to do these days.

I'm not a huge fan of Android but I am a huge fan of cheaper, higher quality smartphones for the masses.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 807: Anti-Virus Not Dead Yet

A lot of people in the Information Security industry say Anti-Virus is dead. I don't agree.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 806: WiFi First Mobile Phone Service

When we think of mobile phone service, we tend to think it uses a mobile phone network of some sort, with WiFi being provided as an option for some of its services. A few providers in the US have turned this model on its head, using WiFi as it's primary network with traditional 3G/4G/LTE as a backup. The benefit to the customer: a lower cost service.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 805: Net Neutrality: We Just Don't Know Yet

A lot of people cheered for what they thought the FCC decided about how to regulate Internet providers in the United States. The reality is, we haven't seen the actual guidelines as of now, so why are many happy when, in reality, we don't know exactly what's been decided.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 804: Spectrum Feast or Famine

Depending on which mobile network operators you talk to when, you'll get a different answer on whether or not they have enough radio spectrum to service their customers. What bothers me are the parties that buy spectrum and don't actually use it for anything except to keep it out of other people's hands.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 803: Another Case of TSA Douchebaggery

When your douchebaggery is so bad it continues to make the news, maybe you should do something to correct it. Unless you're a government agency like the TSA, of course, who continues to prove it is both unable to provide any actual security in airports while at the same time harassing individuals who clearly pose a threat to no one.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 802: Hijacking URL Schemes

URL Schemes are a pretty nifty way to share information between applicationa on iOS. Unfortunately there is no way to ensure the app you expect to process said scheme actually does, which when paired with Enterprised-signed apps, creates a potential security vulnerability.

PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 801: Coffee: Part of a Balanced Diet

It seems the "it's (not) good for you" pendulum has swung towards being good for you for many people's favorite drink: coffee. In moderation, of course.

Long ago, when I didn't work for Check Point Software, this site used to be a well-visited FAQ site on the Check Point firewall products. Nowadays, I sit in my virtual office and write about what I'm interested in, which includes: computers, telecom, VoIP Service, mobile phones, and many other forms of shiny gadgets.

Some other projects I'm doing include: PhoneBoy's Security Theater, where I discuss computer and network security-related topics, and PhoneBoy Speaks, a daily podcast where I discuss whatever technology and security issues are on my mind.
