Apple FairPlay DRM To Be Licensed to iPod Accessory Companies
Crunchgear led me to an article on tech.co.uk about Apple Opening up FairPlay DRM. If this report is to be believed, companies that make authorized accessories for the iPod will be able to license FairPlay DRM to use in their accessories. In theory, this will let their partners “under the kimono” so to speak and give them greater access to the tracks.
It would be cool if Apple licensed their FairPlay DRM to other MP3 device manufacturers, which is what some of the follow-on articles are suggesting. However, I suspect that is not the case, though it would be cool if it were. I’d like to see them license FairPlay to Nokia.
