Why is Skype So Popular?
I would add two things to this excellent article by Martin Geddes, who raises a lot of points I wouldn’t have thought of if only because I’m used to all the marketing crap MSN, AOL, and Yahoo foist on people:

Skype runs on a lot of platforms. While Windows certainly gets the new features first, Mac and Linux usually aren’t too far behind. I am a little worried that the Pocket PC version hasn’t been updated in a while. And where’s the damn Symbian version already?

The “Skype Experience” is more or less the same on all supported platforms. I have used all four versions of Skype at various times and I can tell you that it aside from some minor UI differences between the platforms, it functions exactly the same on all platforms.
