Made an Important Decision Today
I am not going to share the content of this decision with you–yet. However, I can share some of the thought process that went into it.
At most any other point in my life, the decision I made today would have been way tougher to make. However, this descision comes during a time of great change in my life. Having taken The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training, I have gained a whole new perspective, which is causing me to reevaluate nearly every aspect of my life. I have a renewed sense of purpose with a clarity that I haven’t had before. I also have the courage to act upon it.
In the context of 7 Habits, this decision came about because I was able to practice habits 1, 2, and 3. The first habit, Be Proactive, came about because I had an emotional reaction to something that happened and I was able to take advantage of the space between that “stimulus” and response. I tried to understand why I felt the way I did.
The second habit, Begin With the End in Mind, came about because it caused me to reevaluate this decision in terms of my mission statement. It did cause some small refinements to my mission statement as well, as I realized it was defined a little too broadly.
The third habit, Putting First Things First, which I will write more about next week, is applicable here. When I realized that this thing I had decided on was, in the context of my mission, not important, the decision to let go of it ended up being very easy to make. In fact, I dare say it felt empowering to have made that decision. I consider it a victory.
