Does Skype Prevent Long Calls?

Unfortunately, over the past two days, I have spent nearly 18 hours on the phone. It was either that or fly to Atlanta to be at a meeting, so I’m happy to have the option not to travel. :) However, it’s been a bit hard on me since I’ve had to get up at the crack of dawn.

Anyway, I’ve mostly been using Skype and my Unlimited North America plan to join these marathon calls. The quality is decent and the price is right–already paid for :) However, I noticed an annoying “issue” with Skype doing these calls. After about 4 hours in, the call unceremoniously dropped! I suspect they have this to prevent people from nailing up a circuit 24×7–something dialup Internet service providers used to do also.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with long calls and Skype? Was it an anomaly? Let me know by leaving a comment.

I also have experienced this and found the following kb article:

the kb posting confirms the four hout limit. however it says the reason is to prevent customers overspending. actually in the case of the unlimited plan it is only skype themselves who would be doing the spending. if that is the true reason(i doubt it!) than skype should enable this only on pay per minute accounts and not unlimited plans.

Yeah it does say that. From the article:

Why are my calls cut off?

Skype disconnects all calls to phones that have lasted for 4 hours. This helps to protect users from overspending when they have hung up but the call has not been disconnected for technical reasons. Please note you can redial easily from call history area.
