PhoneBoy Speaks Ep 1050: The Barbed Wire Telephone System
The wired telephone system has been around in the United States since the late 19th Century. At the turn of the 20th Century, after the patents for the telephone expired, people figured out they could use existing barbed wire to set up what was effectively a local area telephone system for their neighborhood. This was done primary because the Bell System had not reached them yet. Once it did, the local makeshift solution was largely abandoned.
